Out of my Mind follows Melody, a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, as she struggles through year 5.
Sharon M Draper’s writing depicts Melody’s thoughts and struggles beautifully. I felt Melody’s anger and frustration, I felt her sadness and her joy; I was on a rollercoaster of emotions and there was no getting off. Along with this, I'm not one to show emotions to books - I don't usually cry or laugh even in the darkest or funniest scenes, but quite a few times in this book I found myself laughing.
Now, I only gave this book four stars, because there are some minor downsides. First, I found the story a bit hard to follow at points. It wasn't often, but it was there. And second, I wish the ending was a bit better. It was great still and I recommend you read to the end, but it wasn't the one I was expecting.
Overall, this book is fabulous and I recommend it to:
• KIDS 10+ - It might be too dark for some younger kids, but I'd recommend taking a flip through and seeing if it's the right fit for your child.
• BOOK LOVERS - 100% recommend.
• AND ANYONE LOOKING FOR A GOOD READ THAT’S NOT TOO LONG - 👍.
