Bro I looked up the reviews to laugh with people about this movie, but instead I found myself in the minority on this one.
In my opinion, this movie is horribly mid. The storyline is very straightforward and predictable, but that's not something particularly out of place in what is ultimately a kids movie.
However, the music is terrible. There isn't a single catchy tune within the movie's runtime, and Timothรฉe Chalamet's singing is particularly difficult to listen to. To top it off, half of the runtime is spent on these musical numbers.
They introduce painfully unlikable side characters, where I would have liked to see a more focused film on Wonka himself. Who, while on the topic, comes off as a bland character who's only redemption is... magic? The movie feels too slow, ending right when you want to see where it goes, and at the same time far too fast skipping any and all 'experimentation' with candy or seeing him progress as a chocolate maker. Instead, it's focused on becoming rich and famous, which is unengaging, as everyone who tries his chocolate loves it, so all of the film's plot feels pointless.
This film loses sight of Wonka's madness that makes him such a compelling character. This version of Wonka doesn't feel like he would give his factory away to a random child after letting all but one of them be deformed. They also made him illiterate for some reason? Which doesn't make sense because he clearly reads a handful of times prior to this reveal. ('no daydreaming allowed' being one of them).
I know this is a kids movie, so I'm being wayyy too harsh but everybody seems to think this movie is good and I can't fathom that opinion.
