It's always fascinating to see how a screenplay is transcribed from a novel. Some film adaptations are true to the original, e.g. Brideshead Revisited (1981) and the 2008 movie, which is not. I was reading Elizabeth Strout's novel and was a few chapters in when I stumbled upon the HBO mini-series. The gritty personality of Olive hadn't come through while reading. Frances McDormand however, is brilliant as Olive Kitteridge. I can see why she bought the rights to a film version. It's too bad that the mini-series crunched the novel into just 4 episodes. It loses a lot. Perhaps there were budget constraints or Jane Anderson the screenwriter didn't think all the chapters were interesting or too difficult to incorporate. At any rate, I'm sure Frances McDormand had a say in it. What's lost in the screen version is the subtlety of Strout's writing, though director Lisa Cholodenko does a fairly decent job of transferring some of this to the screen.

To criticize Barbara Ehrenreich's premises for her book "Nickel and Dimed" as flawed is a best, disingenuous. At worst, typically Republican conservative hypocrisy. A white, educated, and good-looking, hormonally imbued young man not being able to climb up the ladder? I'll bet there were lots of hands extended waiting to pull him up, some from women, none from people of color. "Go sell crazy somewhere else Adam! We're all full up here..."

Scratch Beginnings

I was going to write a long review but I see that "Kindle Customer" and several others had already said what I was going to on Amazon. This biography is tiresome, written by a gay man about a gay artist. I initially read it closely, then found myself skipping paragraphs, then pages, then chapters. It is repetitious, tedious, ribald, and at times swishy. There is another biography by Sue Taylor but at $50 and another 350 pages, I think I got the gist of it, thank you!
