I really liked the idea behind The Game of Gnomes. And the charismatic author sold it to me before I even read the back blurb.
The characters are fun, and the puns are hilarious. But the writing style? Not gonna lie, it gets a bit wordy at times. Take the second sentence of the book as an example:
“The unfortunately-named plump little gnome was fortunate enough to have a sturdy shelter from the increasingly persistent wind outside.” It’s a bit of a mouthful, right? Honestly, it kind of pulls you out of the story, because it feels like you have to work to get through it. Also the lack of punctuation messes with my dyslexic little brain.
I did enjoy the book overall, but the writing can make it feel like a bit of a slog. I ended up not reading the second book, even though I already bought it. The series has potential, though, so I’m hoping the next one smooths out the flow a bit more.
