It’s interesting that MJ put Little Susie/Pie Jesu right before Smile, the last song of the HIStory album.
The song Little Susie reminds me of Dostoevsky's The Grand Inquisitor. How should a man be supposed to remain pious when the most innocent children are subjected to extreme cruelty and killed? Once again, I marveled at his courage for daring to look straight and thinking deeply about these dark sides of reality.
He wasn’t just Peter Pan, who wants to live in Neverland forever. He was a warrior, who fights for the outside world. That he put Smile in the end — is a gentle, quiet act of resistance and faith. He was childlike, but not childish. He was innocent, but not native.
I can barely imagine the inner conflicts he went through to convince himself that God still exists and hope still prevails against despair. The fact is, in the last years of his life, he frequently used the phrase "God bless you" when talking to his fans. This was not just a pleasantry, but carried the weight of someone who had wrestled with God and still chose to bless, to forgive, and to heal.
More than a decade passed, with all the shabby allegations, unbearable ordeals, you haven't wavered. You’ve done what you set out to do on this album.
