I am giving this 3 stars because this is basically 6/10 - just passed the line. If you were born and spent part of or all of your childhood in mainland China before the market economy was introduced and gradually adopted across the nation, this show is very predictable to you: 1) Because of some kinds of threats in the outside world, people are trapped in one specific region and they need to produce and manufacture everything for themselves; 2) Since the resource is tight, there is tight control in population growth so woman does not have a say for their bodies - you need permit to get pregnant; 3) You will take over your parent's job when you grow up and some jobs are superior to some others - not easy to switch path or travel through classes/levels; 4) As a regular labour you probably do not have a kitchen at home and you eat with fellow workers in a big canteen; 5) Stability/Harmony is the core - no you don't want to know the truth. Among various kinds of dystopia shows and movies, Silo is the one that lacks creativity, unfortunately.
The role Juliette was modeled as someone who is unconventional, independent, brave and risk-taking truth seeker because of love, at least at the beginning. However, she failed to see the former sheriff going out to clean as part of the signal first and almost missed the real signal which could led her to be much close to the truth. What she wanted most in her job as a mechanical was to open the generator and have a fix to get to the bottom of the problems. She did not bring this up the the mayor immediately when the mayor came down to see her and she also rejected the appointment because she did not see that as the signal promised by the former sheriff. If it is not some NPC found the marks behind the badge, she could have lost two previous opportunities forever, one for engineering work and one for seeking truth. This plot was so bad - the story is going thanks to an NPC, not the real and core conflicts.
Rebecca Ferguson, aka Juliette in this show, is a great actress. She was also the mother in Dune, who is calm, confident, strong-minded and smart. Juliette was a role with weak model and structure in characteristics, compare to other strong female characters in Sci-Fi. If we take Juliette as a regular folk, she was too passive sometimes compared to the women in The Handmaid's Tale who were constantly looking for chances to do this and that.
PS: She seemed to be willing to risk in water while working in mechanics, but not in the journey following George's hints to find out more about Silo's mysteries.
