Mary Magdalene, the Movie started Off Fantastically with a Grand Opening Trailer Enticing the Audience to want to Watch More. But Once I started the movie and 10 Minutes in after the Main Character Mary, Follows Jesus, the audience can quickly come to Realise that the Script is Not based on Any Biblical Account, as Other Movies about Christ So faithfully try to do.
Very Little is quoted from the Bible, if Anything at All. The viewer who knows the Bible well will quickly become Uncomfortable with the Overly Affectionate and Touchy Jesus presented here, as well as the Increasingly Overbearing Mary who Presumes She can Tell Jesus what to do, which is Highly Off Track Compared to the Real Biblical Mary and the Real Biblical Jesus!
Her interactions with Jesus are Increasingly and uncomfortably Affectionate especially when She Walks up to where Jesus is lieing on a Rock and just Lay's down next to him and the Scene Ends leaving the Viewer to Wonder what might have happened there, which borders on Gnostic and Dan Brown ideas of her Intimate Relationship with Jesus, All Highly Unbiblical as the Bible Not ONCE suggests this, which we can presume would be Included if it was Important.
The Jesus presented Seemed Unbelievably Fragile and Does NOT Seem to be the same Jesus the Viewer will Find when reading the Bible. He nearly Faints at every Healing Including the Resurrection of the dead man, as well as nearly faints after Confronting the Handlers at the Temple Entrance when they Seize him.
As Promising as this Movie Started Off as, it has Turned out to be Disappointing in Many levels for Even the Non-religious Viewer with its descending Dramatics and Poor execution even for Such a Good Cast.
It was a Mix-mash of Cherry picking from the Bible and Gnostic Texts and the Alleged Gospel of Mary written Many Years After the Death of Jesus and the death of Mary too.
As has Often Happened, unfortunate as it may be, Mary's Character and Age and Background, are Left to each person's Interpretation, however Distorted. IF This Movie has Stuck to Actual Bible Understanding it would have Shown that There were Other Influencetial Women who Followed Jesus Including Mary and Martha, whom the Bible records as "being Loved by Jesus", them and their brother Lazarus who was Raised from dead. Mary has Always been known as the One who had 7 Demons, yet the Movie has Jesus saying "There are No demons here". Even though the Bible does not Distinguish between This Mary with the Demons and the Woman who was caught in the Act of Adultery whom Jesus rescued from a Public Shaming and Stoning as well as the Woman who Annointed Jesus's Feet with Expensive Oil..
Whether The Roman Catholic Church Branded Mary as a Prostitute or Not, whether She was or not, It is Not referred to in the Bible at All. She Could have been a Young Woman as the Movie suggests or She could be an Older, Successful and Wealthy Woman who Made her Fortune from the Successful Fishing Industry of the Area Magdalabor through Marriage? And with that wealth was providing financially for Jesus and His Followers as they Travelled. It is not Conclusively known..
It is All Ambiguous and unknown as not Much is Recorded about her..However is it Very Clear from the Movie that there is a 21st Century Feminist and Gnostic Agenda to the Interpretation of Mary's Character which is Both Unbiblical and a Disappointing Retelling of a Story that Could have been Great, Which Once Again Aims at Distorting the Character, Deity and Preeminence of Jesus.
