*Spoiler alert*
I was really interested in seeing this movie, went and saw it today. It was kind of slow, but the story kept me into it enough. I have never read the book. I liked it, but didn’t love it. I couldn’t fully take it seriously as someone who has survived DV myself. It just was not an accurate depiction of what actually happens in an abusive relationship. It made the abuser look like a pretty normal guy who would suddenly lash out in a rage of jealousy and physical aggression. In reality, there is usually a lot of control and manipulation that go along with these behaviors. The movie just didn’t portray that, except for one scene where he nearly forced her to read a review to try and intimidate her. Again, I liked the movie. I liked the ending, even though typically (in reality) there is not a knight in shining armor who shows up to save the day.
In all fairness, I thought the acting was really great.
What bothers me is the movie is dramatic as if it is supposed to be realistic, but it’s just not believable.
Would give 2.5 stars if I could.
