While I appreciate his efforts, considering the environment & conditions under which this book was written, it has been written more with western readers in mind than Indians. The comparisons with contemporary artists, writers and scholars is a clear indication of that. Although JLN delved into ancient Indian history but the western influence on his thought process is clearly visible where he almost despises things Indian.
What stands out is his reverence for the Chinese civilisation and a blind faith in them. China was later placed at the high seat of permanent member in Security Council based on this recommendation. Similarly from hindsight we know how Tibet was overrun and we had to suffer a humiliating defeat in 1962 because of this mental block. If only he was more pragmatic and had sought advice of his council of ministers, probably Indian History post Independence,would have been different
