Before I start; I want to say i’m only in episode nine so don’t attack me if anything changes. I don’t want to resume watching for a little bit, so until a week or two, I’m not updating for episodes 9 through 16.
First of all, everything in this is so commonly used it hurts. I had just started watching My ID Is Gangnam Beauty and got recommended this, and it was way too similar.
The girl is ugly, gets bullied, has a makeover, goes to a different school, falls in love with someone they knew prior to their first day, that boy they like knows how they actually look, the boy protects her.
It’s way too similar for me, but I had continued watching due to the love triangle. However, it became more boring as the love interest I know she ends up with isn’t a good guy whatsoever and is quite frankly just annoying. He ruins every moment between Ju-kyeong and Seo-jun because he’s jealous, which is annoying. Most of the time Seo-jun is just helping her out (the scene where she’s sick, she’s crying, embarrassed) and it’s aggravating. He also is a creep. He stalked her on her blind date because he was jealous. That is weird and creepy not cute! Also the time he blackmailed her to doing errands for him (he shouldn’t have done that because he knows that Ju-kyeong tried to kill herself because of her looks) and furthermore the scene where he says he only wanted to go on a date with her because he pitied her bad looks underneath the makeup.
It isn’t even “entertaining bad” at this point, it’s maddening and I can’t stand him having one second of screen time.
He’s a “cold rich bad boy” and it’s so obvious that’s the trope they are going for. It’s not working; even if he has trauma, instead of working on himself and on his past, he lets it interrupt how other people operate and it gets on my nerves.
The only part that is good about this series is her sister and her love interest, but she barely gets any screen time so I can’t even remember her name. But it’s her and Eun-woo. Even the part going against popular tropes and is entertaining to me, still makes me mad. He is too naive, and I can tell it’s because the girl is how a man would usually be and the man is how the girl would usually be… as we know girls in Korean shows are always annoyingly naive.
I also want to talk about Ju-kyeong being one of the most annoying characters despite being the main character. She constantly falls into peoples arms. Not a coincidence considering it’s a show, but they couldn’t tone it down a little bit? It gets so repetitive and it, as well, is also very common in Korean dramas, and it’s not that I like it. I feel as if nobody really likes that ongoing thing. Also, I assume the Webtoon writers wrote her to be cute and oblivious? It’s just not doing it for me. Her being scared of a worm but open to horror and vomiting? I do not understand whatsoever.
I wish to see more Korean dramas going against commonly used tropes soon. I enjoyed a lot of my watch but most times I almost threw my phone across my room from 0-6am at night due to embarrassment not only because of the horrible tropes and badly written characters, but because of the cringey scenes as well.
Needless to say, the actors must have done a very good job because I was VERY annoyed.
