The trailer made the movie look way worse than it actually is, which I can’t tell was deliberate to keep parents from accidentally showing it to their kids or just poor marketing. Fixed is a good movie- not fantastic, but it’s good! It’s a passion project by Genndy Tartakovsky and it shows. I liked all of the characters, even Sterling because his obnoxious prideful attitude was funny to watch. Everyone was endearing in their own way. The story was a little slow in the beginning, but that’s forgivable because in the context of setting up the characters’ arcs, it makes sense.
I didn’t care for the dog assholes + Bull’s nuts sticking out so much, but I’m pretty sure that was the point since it’s a common experience to be walking your dog and feel awkward looking at their backside most of the time. It’s not ALWAYS drawn on them, so that’s a breath of fresh air.
The sex jokes didn’t bother me, but I could very easily see someone being annoyed by it. If you like raunchy jokes, this movie is a fun watch. Even the non-sexual jokes are funny, like the Bri’ish accent early on and the fact all of the show dogs look exactly. the. same.
I also appreciate the more serious aspects of the story. Despite what the trailer depicts, there’s quite a few wholesome, soft moments that were a breath of fresh air. It’s also a subtle commentary on the dog breed standard, one that draws connections between these competitions and the toxic environment of pageants based only on appearance- which again, every purebred dog at the show looked exactly the same, yet when faced with failure, only picked out their flaws.
Overall, I think Fixed is way better than the trailer made it seem. If you’re an adult and like adult animation, I’d give the movie a try! It’s made by a passionate team and deserves some love!
