Comparing it to OG Sonic titles would be doing it a disservice.
It plays better, looks better, and offers a whole lot more.
Quality gameplay mechanics tied to each of the 3 playable characters, respectively.
Absolutely phenomenal original soundtrack, paired with some wonderfully designed stages to boot!
I'm not sure if its fair to fault a game for its difficulty, but it does provide a substantial challenge to anyone who doesn't make above-average use of their character's abilities during play.
This is truly my favourite part about the game - its fairly challenging for your first run.
There are some tidy alternative game modes for those who like Time Trials; break the targets whilst navigating a small course, of which there are quite a few. (30+?) Which all increase in challenge as the number rises.
As a small final note - I do think alot of the problems one could face whilst playing this game, can ultimately boil down to: What controller you used to play.
- Keyboard or Gamecube controller? Everything feels natural.
- Modern Dualshock/XBOX standard controller? Maybe not.
Which feels odd to make a note of, since typically it would be the other way round if we were talking about general play for any other game.
It's something about the button placements vs. the expectation of your ability to make use of invincibility frames, whilst platforming and avoiding bits and bobs, all at the same time.
The game itself handles smoother than you'd expect, given the homage - but there are some notable nuanced troubles when messing around between the 4 types of controllers.
Overall, quality experience worth having a gander if you fancy speedy platforming with toppings of fighting game tech.
Definite must buy for anyone who likes to beat their own records.
