"Ashes to Ashes" is one of the few series I've ever watched that is so masterfully designed it takes your breath away. People say it's not as good as it's predecessor "Life on Mars" and I agree: IT'S FAR BETTER! It depicts with striking realism for a fantasy driven drama the harsh and unfair behaviour women had to put up with in the 80s (and still do now) and how hard they have to fight to be taken seriously, especially when they have managed to be in a position of power. It deals with topics of police corruption and power abuse with a tastefulness no other show ever has. Through the introduction of Alex Drake, (brilliantly portrayed by legend Keeley Hawes) characters that were introduced in the original series, like Gene Hunt, Ray Carling and Chris Skelton, as well as newbie Shaz Granger, evolve so naturally and in ways one would not necessarily expect. The attention to detail is so striking that a) you need at least one rewatch to fully grasp it and b) all other shows would be jealous of!
The character dynamics are utterly brilliant, starting with the main duo, Alex and Gene, where you get pure entertainment, drama, romance, bickering and all in all their glory (plus, two incredible actors like Keeley and Philip Glenister who are on a roll!), and continuing on with the rest of the team that is pure delight to watch. It's obvious the cast worked well together!
All in all, WATCH this! 24 hours of your life you will want to repeat forever!
