This book seemed interesting but upon reading it became clear that it was not well thought out or planned. Many parts of the book were left unexplained like what the actual antagonists look like all we have is what they are called. Along with that fact there was practically no character development or description for spensa other than the front cover. She was also no really developed emotionally because in the scene she realizes how her dad dies all she thinks about is how he wasn’t a coward and how everyone was wrong not how he died or why. There’s also nothing in the book about her actually missing her dad. More on top of that would be holes in the world building like an actual description of where spensa lives, what types of food they eat other than rats, and what currency and languages are used. I think there are many ways I could make this book way better than it was but since this is the way the book was written I would not recommend for people going in thinking it is really good or that there will be actual good content. Another very sad thing is that this book was classified as YA I mean I guess some themes are mature like the talks of death and very small amount of romance but otherwise I classify this as a children’s book for grades 4-7 based on personal experience. I read this book thinking it would be great and I finished it mad, sad, and annoyed that I wasted my time reading it, maybe it gets better in the series but I won’t be sticking around to find out.
