What perhaps those who detested this movie do not understand is that, like in Hereditary, Mr. Aster appears much more interested in eliciting an emotional response from his audience than providing "scares."
With that in mind, one can only look at Midsommer as a success in achieving that goal.
One reviewer called it an "Adult Fairy Tale." I prefer 'Adult Scary Tale" about the inability by Christian, after a relationship of "four years," to understand and address his partner's emotional and psychological needs to the point that the only way for Dani to find a new "family," after her biological family is destroyed by her sister, is joining a cult.
Cannot wait what psychological journey Mr. Aster is going to ask us to take in his next film.
