The Byrds most creative effort. What Byrds did best was utilizing every genre possible at their disposal. Whether it was Folk-rock, country-rock, psychedelic rock, Raga-rock, free Jazz they always hit the mark. This album combines most different approaches into one fluid combination. Their best songs on this album is in my humble morning:
Change is Now - A rare country-psych gem who combines both genres perfectly. Utilizing the same guitar tone Spinach uses for Mind Flowers (I think it is a guitar through a moog raga no?) we get McGuinn solo to bring David Gilmour to to his knees.
Goin’ Back - How can you even describe this beauty? Baroque-pop, folk ballad, psychedelic pop? Is that enough? Some of the best vocal harmonies they offered, and that chorus will surely bring a tear to your eye. In my opinion their best song they recorded.
All other songs are equally excellent in their own matter. Get to you has clear Beatles influence, Old John Robertson preceded Lookin’ Out My Back Door and does it even better. Space Odyssey, one of the first space rock compositions in popular music. And I haven’t even mentioned the country psych Wasn’t Born to Follow yet. Yeah this is a 5.
