Three hours of movie with one and half hours of filler
Spoiler Alert
Almost a year ago when the first teaser was released, I was disappointed. And the trailer was decent for me, there was not any wow moment in the trailer. I went to the theater with zero expectations. Opening scene of Kalki 2898 AD was amazing, the Kurukshetra war scene was one of the best. Movie couldn't have had a more epic opening sequence, all the scenes from Mahabharat war were great, and it did not fail to impress in that part. VFX and CGI was fantastic and impressive, still in some frames VFX and CGI was noticeable, but overall it was great and well finished. City of Kashi was well designed, and the dystopian future environment was cinematic.
First half of the movie really tests the penitents. But some moments in the first half were great. And most importantly, the performance of Amitabh Bachchan in the role of Ashwathama was BEST, you can feel energy in him especially at the age of 81. Prabhasโs entry was forgettable, his first action sequence was so long and the action was not impressive. Prabhas was great in some scenes but Bhairavaโs humor did not work for me, Deepika was good, Kamal Haasan was on screen for a few minutes but every minute of Kamal Haasan was memorable. All the cameos were surprising, especially SS Rajamouli's cameo. Movie tells the character of Bhairava more than showing, he repeatedly keeps saying I never lose a fight, well the movie doesnโt follow the rule of show donโt tell. Screenplay was so slow in the first half, it wastes so much time in the first half, but the movie took up speed in the second half.
Second half was more entertaining than the first half. Background score was alright, the opening song sung by Amitabh Bachchan really set the environment of Kalki. And all the weapons in the movie were so unreal, the design of weapons wasnโt good. All the guns looked like toy guns, especially Shambhalaโs armyโs white guns. BTW Shambhala was beautiful in the movie. Surprisingly, 3D was good. Usually I donโt watch in 3D but the 2D show was not available. The 3D glasses make the screen darker but the Kalki was great in 3D. Humor works in some scenes but most of it was forceful and the movie spent so much time on unnecessary things. This movie is the first movie in the Kalki cinematic universe and every minute is important for establishing the world of kalki and character development, but more focuses on adding unnecessary scenes that don't add anything to the story. It tells how the Complex works and the power system of the complex. And the song in the first half of the movie in the Complex was boring and unnecessary, and I still donโt understand wasting more than twenty minutes on it.
I liked all the Kurukshetra scenes, and Nag Ashwin did a really great job presenting the Kurukshetra war. But when it comes to the dystopian future part, I am not comparing but I kept remembering Hollywood dystopian future movies, obviously there will be some similarity. I am interested in the story of Kalki. I hope Nag Ashwin will take feedback from fans and I hope that the next movie in the Kalki cinematic universe will focus on screenplay, character development and expanding story.
Positive points - Amazing VFX and CGI, performance of Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, good 3D, history of Ashwathama, Kurukshetra war sequences, good climax.
Negative points - Slow screenplay, bad humor, unnecessary boring senses that does not add anything to the story, hindi dubbing couldโve been a better movement of lips and dialogues were not matching.
Overall it was a decent movie for me.
