Not too many expectations going in to watch this movie, having seen the 2002 documentary of Mark Kerr's life and career from a raw and intimate perspective, it was hard for me to invest emotionally with Dwayne Johnson's portrayal. He played Kerr as more of a caricature of the actual person rather than growing into the subtleties of the role (like Kerr's softspoken demeanor that belied his brutish violent strength when he fought), which made some of the more dramatic scenes less believable. Unlike the biopic of the Von Erich family (The Iron Claw, another A24 offering) and the dynamic that shaped that story, this film was more of an afterthought to Kerr's slow nadir having succumbed to PED and painkiller addictions within the backdrop of a highly successful fighting career. Nostalgic but barely worth a watch.
