First, I have to say that this movie kept me very entertained throughout it, and the animation/visuals/songs are amazing. I am also a sucker for any East Asian folklore-inspired media, so seeing all of these creature references made me very happy.
However, like most other people say, the main criticism I have is with the plot. My main criticisms are:
- We didn't have much time to know the characters. While this is not inherently an issue, I do think it is a big one in this case because even Rumi's backstory is vague (was her parents happily in love?). Jinu's circumstances was also vague enough that it's unclear if he is supposed to be good/sympathetic (and if so, to what degree?). It is also the fact that Mira's aunt, who is the most integral to Mira's backstory, only appeared for 2 scenes and thus became rather forgettable.
- The lack of essential worldbuilding details, such as how exactly one would become a demon or how the honmoon worked. These details matters to how we perceive the characters and how we understand *why* characters do what they do.
- The film contracts its own direction/message near the end. When Jinu was revealed to have a (maybe real?) sympathetic backstory, I was covninced that the film is going to explore the more human side of the demons. They are implied to be manipulated by Gwi-Ma in the past, causing them to become demon. Jinu likely wasn't the only one. Furthermore, the background of Mira being half-demon (and not evil at all) further implies this. Yet, the film does not give time to explore that side of the story other than Jinu. The climax had the girls defeat ther est of the demons and seal them in the underwold, and I was a bit stunned when I realize this.
The plot would've been less rushed if it was a TV show rather than the movie. While I did laugh and find it enjoyable, I wouldn't rewatch it. While I understand the social media obsession with it (due to its refreshing visuals, songs, and orignal plotline *cough disney*), I don't understand why it's beloved to this degree, and I certainly wouldn't call it one of my favorite animated movies.
