okay just let me explain myself for the 2 stars given. consider me kind for even giving extra 1 star after all the upcoming comments i have typed. A quick disclaimer tho, I am the type to always watch shows doesnt matter if it's anime or whatever, purely to enjoy them. I dont usually bother to find flaws in a show so when i finished this series i was so so annoyed.
the only reason i added 1 more star to the rating is because i liked the idea of the satan story taken from the bible and the pure evil character of Asuka Ryo, kind of remind me of the ruthless characters like Hisoka (hxh) and Yagami Light (death note). I mean for me, having such characters actually appeal to me as it kept me interested.
but that's that.
it's netflix after all. they dont really put much care into the quality of the shows they produce most of the time. i'd give a simple explanation.
audio wise (opening ending songs, voicing n such) - 2/5
man its just bad to me. i usually am not so picky when it comes to this and the animation but seriously it keeps nothing interesting. OP is literally not my cup of tea and voice acting is the only reason i gave it a 2. bc it wasnt bad. but the rest, oh hell no.
visual wise (animation n blabla) - 1/5
if u care a lot for this, just drop the idea of watching this. it has not even shades or any form of artistic presentation. as i said i am not too selective about such thing but then again i cant accept it. some may say that the drawings and animation may be "unique" but it just look like a lazy drawing to me. nothing special, not appealing at all.
story + characters - 1/5
this is usually the most important thing right? however it was rushed, fighting scenes details were skipped, no solid meaning. i honestly don't understand how others would even label this series as a "tearjerker". Like have you ever watched koe no katachi? or grave of fireflies? or tokyo magnitude 8.0? even one piece made me cry more, n they said this series portrays a strong bond of friendship n blablabla. stop, just go n watch one piece n naruto. those r the shows with actual strong bonds between friends. this show may appeal to viewers that liked things like sexual contents but seriously this series does not have any meaningful elements to it.
besides that people may also say, "ohhh BUT U MISSED THE IMPORTANT VALUES OF ALL THAT WAS TRYING TO BE DELIVERED THROUGH THIS SERIES." no, just stop it. what? r u trying to talk about the deep and dark truth about humanity and the devil lingering in the depth of humans' hearts? no. if u dont trust me go ahead n watch neon genesis. that's what u call a mature representation of the supposedly humans' darker nature that devilman crybaby was conveying. i am fully aware that the devilman's series is an old series, older enough than neon genesis evangelion to be an inspiration for the series itself. Just a big BUT for you, this show is new and it is supposed to be better than what a 1980's releases could offer. At the very least I beg, in its presentation. Like why the hell does everything look so pretentious and empty to me?
the characters lol. what growth are the people talking about? except for ryo and akira, other characters went through no sorts of development, thus why i would call them flat characters. and the supposedly empathetic akira that cries for every living beings' pains feels nothing but pretentious. although in honesty, i think he could be presented more sincere with his feelings n is actually empathetic if it wasn't for netflix taking charge of this animation.
overall, i am sorry.
