Tamas, The great work by Bhisham Sahni is actually a tale of Darkness. The Riots that took place before India got its independence, is the plot of this novel....
Though it is a fictional account Published in 1973, reading it made me realy terrified because the shocking similarities of the incidents in the book and what happened just this year in Parts of Delhi make this quite contemporary.... which is sad... after almost 50 years have passed since this novel came out and even today we are ready to Murder someone who is just like us... only because we are made to believe in dangers to our "Religion"...
I could not help but keep drawing parallels between the fictional world and the real world...
the brainwashing, the hate speeches, the propagandas, the religious fanaticism... nothing is different... every chapter every word seems to be a real account of events and yes, i know this was the situation then but it's the 2020 events and its similarity is which is scary, after all the boasting of continuous development we are nothing better...
About, the Novel... well, The writing is so great that it makes you feel every emotion with it's words... No Doubt, it is a winner of the "Sahitya Academy Award" i did not see any point in the Book which i can criticise but yes, if people do actually read this and understand what it truly wants to depict then maybe the purpose will be served....
The Novel is basically a depiction of the Riots and therfore does not have any designated protagonist... which was a first of its kind for me...
I was Shocked, terrified and at the same time glad to have read a master piece... and if a book brings all these emotions together you should be assured that the book will be a good read...
So, Do read it and try to know the reason of this work existing...
I read the Book in Hindi on Juggernaut app but if you are not comfortable with Hindi you can definately get the English Translations but you must read it...
Will be Happy to Discuss this book with you...
Happy Reading...
