The film overall is OK, but I don’t recommend watching it. The first three films had a great ending to the series, and Jeff Kinney had announced that there was never going to be a fourth film. However, there happened to be one.
The plot is simple: going on a road trip to Meemaw’s birthday. It is understandable that Meemaw was dead in the books, but as Wimpy Kid Wiki says, the films are in a different universe from the books. But there are some parts of the film that were not part of the books:
1. Greg gets a nappy stuck on his hand. What he could have done is just hid the nappy under the ball pit instead of screaming “IT’S A DIAPER!” and becoming “Diaper Hands”. However, the rest of the Corny’s part is accurate based on the book, “The Third Wheel”.
2. Greg and Rodrick did not have phones in the book, but both of them own iPhones. Greg reveals that he doesn’t have a phone in Book 19, “Hot Mess”. However, I don’t see that as a problem.
3. Instead of stopping at a petrol station to pee, Greg instead pees in a bottle, which is NOT from the book. I don’t like the part when Greg was having trouble holding his pee and saying “It’s no use. I can’t hold it.”. However, this was due to the next petrol station or toilet being 37 miles in real life.
4. Instead of going to Soak Central, Greg and Rodrick go to a gaming convention “Player Expo”, which isn’t from the book at all. However, I found this part quite entertaining, but I wish that the Soak Central part was present as well.
It is understandable that the cast was changed due to the original one ageing, but I wish that the team kept some of the actors like Devon Bostick, Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris, as these actors had not aged all that much. However, the new cast is OK, but not as good as the old one.
Overall, this film is average for me and gets a 7/10. I don’t understand why so many people are giving this film negative reviews, because it seems fine to me.
Hopefully, when the animated adaptation of this film comes out, it would be much better compared to this version of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul”.
