Favorite show ever. I love horror, and nothing ever scares me, but this show comes closer than most.
It is not a loud, gory, dramatic type horror. Its more of a subtle, quiet, hidden in the dark and shadows type horror.
Warning: It is very slow. I tried to show it to a friend, and she was clearly dying of boredom. You have to be patient. Even if you get bored, pay close attention, since a lot of the creepy parts are subtle things, like things hidden in the background and shadows and what not. Even if youโre bored, I think the conclusion of the show is worth it.
IF YOU READ THE ONE STAR REVIEWS, PLEASE READ THIS.
Most one star reviews say it is not horror and should be considered a soap opera. Yes, this show has some long and boring dialogue, but it is NOT a soap opera. I CAN NOT STAND soap operas, I hate them SO FREAKEN MUCH, and I LOVE horror, which this show clearly is. Soap operas are about day to day lives. There is no direct build to a climax. Its just up and down and up and down. Hill House also has a lot of up and down and up and down, which makes it seem like a soap opera, but the up and downs are mainly due to a difference in time periods. Hereโs the difference between Hill House and a soap opera: Have you ever had one of those train sets when you were a kid, one of the ones where the pieces of the track click together and you make all sorts of tracks going in different directions? Lets compare soap operas to those. What makes a soap opera a soap opera is the fact that it has a ton of different conflicts rather than one main one. Each track is like a separate conflict in a soap opera. It leads into the next one, but thats all it does. The track can twist and turn in any direction, but in the end, its just one piece leading into the next, then the next then the next. Hill House, though often thought of as a soap opera because its conflicts are also like separate pieces, has pieces that are less like train tracks and more like puzzle pieces. You start to connect one to the other, and in the end it makes one big picture. In other words, the conflicts arenโt separate and pointless, they all come together and create the climax of the show.
Having emotional dialogue scenes between characters is not something that is unique to soap operas, it is simply character arcs and character development. It pains me that some people think that having meaningful character developments and trying to create real emotion automatically makes it any genre but horror.
I watch horror almost every night, and this show is by far the best thing Iโve ever watched.
