I have much to say (mostly good, a little bad) about this film and I've never posted nor intentionally sought out reviews on a movie before. I'm still reflecting on it, several days after watching it.
First, I was in the pre-teen to teen age range when the TV show was on. I watched it, and looked forward to it faithfully week after week, year after year.
My perspective is a little different. I am an American, living in Jamaica part time. I don't really watch TV, so I only knew about this movie, because the name was on the marquee. I assumed it was based on the TV show, and couldn't wait to see it.
Because I no longer watch scary movies, when that edge presented its self in the opening scene, I was very disappointed and thought I might have to leave. But I hung in there by distracting myself thru a few parts.
The overall good of the movie was the way it showed consequence and improvements in most characters morality. It also had interesting twists that I didn't predict, and I usually always predict movie twists.
This movie is technically set before the TV show on a timeline, because (SPOILER ALERT) The original adorable character of Tatoo, became a staff member of the island at the end.
I was really hoping for the true essence of Mr. Roarke and Tatoo in this film and that did not deliver at all. Don't just throw a popular Latino actor in to play Mr. Roark. Though I'm sure he's not easy to match, I wanted a presence my much more closely matched to Ricardo Montalbร n (the original Mr. Roarke).
That took a B+ graded film down to a C+ in my opinion.
