The story was ruined by the astounding inconsistency with which the subjunctive is applied. Several correct instances of, for example, "as if I were" are interlaced with numerous incorrect usages of "if I was" or "as if she was". It really marred the reading experience and makes you wonder that all the people thanked in the acknowledgements who allegedly read the book "countless times" and who earn money for knowing their grammar, have failed to spot this.
