The Batman is a much darker and grittier take on Gotham City and it's villains compared to past films. It's not cartoony, it's not light-hearted, and doesn't pull punches. It shows a deeper part of Batman's fight against crime: the fight to put hope back into a hopeless, chaotic, and lawless city. This is no easy task, as Batman himself questions whether or not the Gotham can be saved, or if it's even worth saving.
