Even though the animation, music, and artwork are very well put together. The comedic writing and storytelling are not. I want to like this series, but it just fails to make me laugh like I do when I find something funny. Like 2 minutes of pure laughter from a joke, that I have to pause the episode, to finish laughing. If it can't do that, I cannot in my conscience call it a good comedy.
I already hear all of you saying, "Wait, can you even tell where the jokes even are?" I would answer to you all saying, "Yeah I can, that's why I am disappointed the jokes were poorly executed."
Ok, let's talk about the storytelling of the series. My main complaint about the storytelling is the hook of the series. If you don't know where the hook is: it's in the fifth episode. I will say that it is a good hook, but the timing of it is too late. If the hook was in the first to the third episode, I would have no complaints about it. But, it is in the fifth, which I have issues with. The issue being in my mind, "Wouldn't you want to hook your audience from the beginning episodes, and not in the later episodes."
For minor complaints about the storytelling, episode two seems like a later episode rather than a beginning episode. The fourth episode is simply written poorly. Finally, there needs to be more explanation of the world the characters are living in. I understand there can be mysteries about the world, but that doesn't mean you should limit basic information to the audience. There are three questions you have to answer to the audience: 1.) What are the goals of the main cast? 2.) How does the world interact with the main characters? 3.) What is the main conflict that the main characters have to deal with?
So far, it answers two out of the three questions for the series overall. Those questions were 1 and 3, but the series answered them in the fifth episode. This is kinda too late for someone who is into storytelling who wants to be hooked.
My final word is that I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone who wants to watch a good comedy. I would probably recommend something like "Malcolm in the Middle" or something like that. If you like "Helluva Boss", that's fine I just gave my reasons why I don't. You have the right to like whatever you want when it comes to your comedic taste.
Sincerely,
Kolter Sands
