Overall a good read. However I felt that referencing her own addiction to romance novels should not have been included given the severity and potentially deadly addictions of most of her patients (eg. drugs, alcohol). Her addiction paled in comparison to those.
Dr. Lembke wrote quite a bit about her support of the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) 12 step program to manage addiction and preached abstinence. She also briefly mentioned Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) another 12 step program.
Well, AA does not work for everyone and its methods are considered by some to be controversial. More of an emphasis should be placed on psychotherapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy to manage addictions and heal from them.
On the last page of her book Dr. Lembke has a section titled "Lessons of the Balance" in which she writes Recovery begins with abstinence. By using her logic someone who has a sex addiction should abstain from sex which is simply unreasonable for most people.
