This is a review from a friend of mine.
Beautifully done. The movie hit so many pressure points. I was left with so many questions and running off adrenaline for hours. What was real/what was fantasy ? What would I have done if put in some of those positions? How much empathy should I actually have ? How far should viewers theorize based on the last 20 minutes of the film ? Was violence and revenge romanticized ? Was it romanticized intentionally ? Is a sequel even possible ? And of course, if peoples societal fears about the movie were completely justified because of recent events/social climate in our country. Opinions will naturally differ and in some cases there are no clear answers. Perhaps that's the most provocative effect the movie has .... Making us reflect deeply and or maybe not even being able to come to certain conclusions in the immediate aftermath.
Class warfare, the delicacy of mental health, the neglect mental health services have received, poverty, self pity, mob mentality, the power of the media, the dichotomy of heroes and villains, societies lust for a symbol / figurehead in times of desperation, the power of rejection and if people are indeed a product of their surroundings or if some people are just born evil. These were some of the blaring themes I noticed. One theme seems to over rule them all though...Mental illness and the damage it can inflict on the masses.
What steps should be taken to stop alienation, isolation and how can connect in a way to stop violence stemming from mental illness ? Im not a movie critic. I barely have time to watch movies but I do know that I have never left a theater with so many questions and inspired to reflect on current times/the psychology of a movie character, so I felt compelled to post the most in depth reflection I possibly could. This post is not political and absolutely not meant to be a forum for divide, so please dont turn it into one. This post isnt negative, so dont make it negative.
Maybe in the end, "its just a movie", decide for yourself...... Go see it and share your thoughts.
Maybe its best said like this (quote by Bob Marley) "If something can corrupt you, you're corrupted already"
