The movie is very accurate take on religion, belief system. Although it doesn’t actually promote anything, it triggers basic questioning that a human should have. I liked the movie, performances and attention to details delivering messages through every scene. People who found it slow, and waiting for the ghost to appear have lost it already. The plot is all about human psychology. How flock of many makes things right even if your common sense should have questioned it already! How you accept things in the name of miracle even if it means to get ready to die. These small things makes it compelling to think and which should rightly be as to what extent religion has to be followed. It was supposed to be personal but has become a mass controlling mechanism.
The way I see it , Hugh’s character is the one who tests your religious belief system by giving worst of the situation. After all we all pray when we are in trouble. And then takes control of the situation, makes you do what he wants to do, and finally have Godly experience. All this he could do by just exploiting your belief system.
The magic here is that he even put things in black and white but people are hopelessly indulged in their belief system and he know that.
I think the surviving sister figured things in better perspective. She says there is actually no use of prayer but it feels good to do so. Now this feel good factor should be limited to oneself but in reality whole humanity is being exploited in the name of almighty and use for the benefit of select few.
Master class plot, very apt narration and a strong message for the takers. Rest will try to find the devil in the movie which is as real or imaginary as God.
