I found ‘After Story’ to be a most worthwhile read. It’s written with a light touch in dealing sensitively with a number of confronting contemporary issues, avoiding the often tedious but understandable angst of other indigenous authors and commentaries. The pages turned over quickly for me as we are taken on a 10 day literary tour of England, stopping off at locations frequented by luminaries of the past, using the occasion for a mother and her daughter to reveal their inner selves and observations in alternating short chapters. Quite possibly the best of my library reading group’s titles for this year.

Rotten Tomatoes gave this a high rating so I made a point of going to a session at my local cinema last night. I did not think it was very good at all. The plot struck me as being hopelessly contrived, lacking in subtlety, and the occasional attempts at humour were almost laughingly bad. I like a good Italian film, but unfortunately they are few and far between, and ‘The Last Amore’ is not one of them.
