Deeply moving and absorbing telling of a true story. Sean Penn's portrayal of a tortured, brutalised man is quite mesmerising and at times upsetting. Penn is a repository of barely contained fury and despair. Mad, bad Mel has to play small to balance this performance. Quite a different film to most, and all the better for it.
