I think you’re either the kind of person who comes to a film like this and can suspend all believe or, you look for some sense of belief in what’s happening. If you are of the latter persuasion, you’re in for a bumpy ride. Chalamet is great as Wonka, so much better than Johnny Depp for my money, presenting a character you have empathy with. It certainly is an all star cast but the story and its construct is so reliant on happenings that are magical, unbelievable or just don’t make sense. If you’re not happy to accept anything thrown at you, it leaves you thinking, ‘well that couldn’t/wouldn’t happen’. My wife loved it, my friends loved it. Basically I’m too old and have clearly lost that child like quality of accepting the unbelievable elements. Pretty on the eye but for me, a missed opportunity to create a Paddington style classic which was just as unbelievable but hangs together so well.
