I love Dickens above all but for me, this is a slightly tough read. Not because of the plot, which sits reasonably well and has all of Dickens style, but by the sheer length. If I remember rightly there were 830 pages. The story was originally serialised for publication and it feels as though when put together as a book, there is too much padding out of the story. Strangely, towards the end I felt he rushed the conclusion of certain relationships and conclusions as though he wanted to get this finished and be somewhere else. Not his finest work for me.

Very much like this book. Once youโve adjusted your mind to what you are reading it is a thought provoking journey. Sad of course but meaningful. Relatively easy read size wise at around 180 pages.

Liked it. It feels as though it would work as well on TV and maybe some will see that as a criticism but Iโm quite happy with it on the big screen. Heโs built up some interesting if well trodden themes and devices but i find myself really looking forward to the second film to find out where some of the characters are heading.

I think youโre either the kind of person who comes to a film like this and can suspend all believe or, you look for some sense of belief in whatโs happening. If you are of the latter persuasion, youโre in for a bumpy ride. Chalamet is great as Wonka, so much better than Johnny Depp for my money, presenting a character you have empathy with. It certainly is an all star cast but the story and its construct is so reliant on happenings that are magical, unbelievable or just donโt make sense. If youโre not happy to accept anything thrown at you, it leaves you thinking, โwell that couldnโt/wouldnโt happenโ. My wife loved it, my friends loved it. Basically Iโm too old and have clearly lost that child like quality of accepting the unbelievable elements. Pretty on the eye but for me, a missed opportunity to create a Paddington style classic which was just as unbelievable but hangs together so well.
