The theme of Saiyaara - a musical love story - which has been a success formula throughout in Bollywood. Time & again, we have seen blockbusters that prove this - QSQT, MPK, KNPH, Aashiqui…
A few surprise elements ... no chart buster nos, no big stars or even any known actors and comes with no big promotions!…But then this banner (YRF) knows the industry and its audience. By default, we are lovers of love stories and good music and being devoid of this for a long time …there we go.. another blockbuster!
Credit goes to the director and scriptwriter. We have an excellent time watching the screen throughout. Saiyaara is a film woven with threads of hope, the constant and unending human drive for connection. It features breakout performances from a fresh, talented ensemble and in fact the film’s greatest strength lies in its performances including supporting roles which are equally memorable. Its most enduring quality is its thematic richness. The film is, at once, a love story, a meditation on grief, and a celebration of the human spirit’s resilience.
It follows the journey of Krish whose fascination with the stars mirrors his own quest to find meaning in a world that often feels cold and indifferent. His broken character makes this film acceptable to Gen Z. His life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Vaani, a free-spirited artist whose own traumas have taught her to see beauty in chaos. Their paths cross in the most unexpected of ways…setting the stage for a relationship that will push both characters to confront their fears, desires, and the truths they have long buried.
Particularly striking are the scenes set along with the sky & stars…the interplay of light and shadow serves as powerful symbols for the characters’ emotional journeys. The use of natural lighting and wide-angle shots allows viewers to lose themselves in both the world of the film and their own reflections.
Of particular note are the moments when music is used not merely as background but as a narrative force. BTW Saiyaara has six music directors adding their flavors! Dialogue is used sparingly but effectively; silences are given as much weight as words.
The film also touches on contemporary issues…environment, pressures of modern life, search for meaning in a rapidly changing world.. without ever feeling preachy or heavy-handed. Instead, these themes emerge from the characters’ journeys and choices. For those willing to surrender to its rhythm, the film offers ample rewards.. a chance to reflect, to feel, and to be transported. Flashbacks are integrated seamlessly, offering glimpses into the formative experiences that shape the characters’ present dilemmas.
The sad part of this film is the dominant theme of the movie. It talks about separation but look at the magic ..“the pain and sadness connects with the audience” There are also moments when the film’s philosophical thoughts threaten to overshadow its emotional core. Yet, these flaws are minor when weighed against the film’s broader achievements.
Saiyaara is a wonderful cinematic experience. It is a film for dreamers, seekers, and anyone who has ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered about their place in the universe. With its exquisite visuals, stirring performances, and deep connection with the audience, Saiyaara marks another bold new direction for contemporary Indian cinema. Thanks to Mohit, YRF & and the whole team.
