I love a good detective story and The Alienist is exactly that. I enjoyed the first season and have enjoyed the second one so far. The cast, the atmosphere, and the cinematography are all very well done. There's a feeling of dread that permeates each episode and yes, although the subject material is quite dark, it SHOULD be dark. The purpose is to show characters that are discovering brand new forensic and scientific methods and using them to solve a mystery that police work alone cannot accomplish. It shows how challenging solving crimes using science must have been in the beginning of detective work. Although it may not be for the more sensitive crowd, I do think it's definitely worth watching both seasons.
