The book does have its strengths.
It would have been nice to get a more in depth understanding of Mon's friends and their personalities, but instead the book focuses just on Non and her emotional fluctuations.
There is too much focus on mundane details in the book, and some elements like the red kites sound interesting at 1st but as the book progresses they sound a bit like an excuse for being unable to present a deeper metaphor.
The dialogues are very numerous and they don't seem to bring any value like ex: knowing someone better, getting substantial information etc.
It feels a lot like the book is just a repetitive cycle of Non, her episodes of anxiety and then her circle of friends providing her reassurance.
Now, the whole idea of the daemons is really good and albeit it does seem to be similar to the zombies, it does feel unique in the universe that the book creates.
The cover is awesome and the ending of the book does go a little bit into symbology and conspiracies. I wish there would have been more of that in the book, instead of descriptions of porridge, insecurities about Non's image, men admiring Meg etc...
The battle scenes are also well described. I wish she could have focused a bit more on that as well. It would have been nice to be held in suspense ex: making me think that Non might die, or even eliminating her to create a gutsy twist.
I only hope that she keeps on growing as an author.
