Two sweeping parallel stories which span the 20th century - the fictional pioneering aviator Marian Davies and the Hollywood actress Hadley who plays her in a film. Both have troubled backgrounds, both fight the battles of being a woman in a man's world, both their stories show the slippery relationship between fact and fiction. Marian's tale is the more gripping, beautifully written, encompassing the doubts loneliness and terrors of early flight and the challenge of circling the globe via poles. But the two stories come together at the end with a clever twist. Loved it!
