SPOILER ALERT!! This is my perspective. The lack of knowledge about how rituals work makes this confusing for some. Of course it didn't seem right that the family turned their backs on Mae and she was the victim BUT a lot of people fail to realize that that is exactly what Mae wanted because she wanted Susanne all to herself. The family was under a spell! Mae used her cult knowledge and did a ritual to turn Susanne's family against her. Look at her alter at the end. She has all their personal items there. For example...The pink shirt was significant cause the daughter got that at a concert with her mom. She used personal items of theirs to set intention to push the family away from Susanne and to ignite Susanne's love for her as a "daughter" Yea all that cult stuff was out of Mae's control but she learned a lot from that cult and she used what she was taught. Mae is very sinister. She didn't care about her friendships or popularity. She wanted a mother to protect her. Just like what Susanne wanted for herself as a teenager. She was easy prey. I loved the show.
