I wanted to see this movie due to its distinguished ranking in Guardian top 100 films of the century. I recognized the vast majority of the films yet I didn't have a clue about this one.
The slow start and tight indoor places was a bit uncomfortable. Gradually the movie appeared delicate almost poetic. Scenes and characters are unrealistic, yet romance can also be sub-real. Slow motion and soft music played a role in interpreting the mood, yet occasionally was exaggerated. The short dialog and silent pauses between the lovers was well crafted and expressive.
I find the shift to absolute reality near the end, with clip of De Degaulle visit to Cambodia, was distracting and unnecessary. In Cannes (Tony Leung) got the best actor award, personally my vote would go to (Maggie Cheung) as the best actress.
