I fail to really follow this as a horror movie. The scariest part of the whole movie was the mash between the stereotypical idiotic missed opportunities. The unaddressed plot hole of how they LEFT THE WHOLE COMPOUND magically in the early morning before anyone was awake, when it came time to leave the second time there is magically a gate that blocks the road.
I just found myself rolling my eyes at the useless human being that is called Ben constantly. The most horrifying part of the whole movie was thinking that the life of his wife and child may have rested in his incompetent and I'm masculine hands. Glad the mom stepped up because...whew...
James McAvoy plays his role well but the whole movie falls apart because it's mostly a story about sissy and his wife that are uncomfortable but incapable of speaking up for about an hour and 25 minutes with a final crescendo where it may have even got to the realm of horror or thriller for the last 20 minutes.
