The House of the Spirits" proved to be a lengthy and unengaging read for me. Perhaps it was an issue of translation, but the book featured overwhelmingly long paragraphs, often spanning multiple pages. I found the female characters' worlds to be narrowly focused on their romantic interests. They struck me as bland, inexpressive, and even weak. Overall, I'd consider it one of the least enjoyable books I've ever encountered.
