If you're asking for a review on film making mastery, then you're looking at closer to 1 star, BUT if you're talking an experience... get along to a theatre where you're with a couple hundred others and you hear the whole theatre erupt into rapturous applause every other minute...where you have those couple hundred people yelling out the lines as they happen even though it's only 2 days after release day...where kids, teens and adults are packed in but everyone has an upbeat energy... where the movie ends and 50 or so kids stay and charge to the front of the cinema to run and dance and play together...I have not had an experience close to this since I was a kid and Independence Day came out.
Don't watch this as a movie and review it... you'll probably hate it, it's silly, gaudy, cliché, simple, overt, patchy and I'm pretty sure if Jack Black did his little tickly-fingers move one more time HR would need to be called... watch it in a theatre full of screaming kids and you'll see why it needs to be rated higher.
As a father of 3 kids 10 and under, this was the most fun movie experience you can have.
Go see it while you can.
