The thing with this show and a lot of Netflix shows these days is that they're trying to do a lot of things at once. G&G doesn't really have a target demographic. At first you think it's a family show about a single mom and a daughter, then it turns into teen drama, then a political drama what with the whole mayoral elections plot, then a murder mystery, a show about teens discovering their sexuality and so on. What I'm trynna say is I got whiplash. But I'm also not complaining. Even with all that it's trying to do it has somehow managed to be impactful in ways I never thought of and yes there is the whole Taylor Swift controversy and that comment was definitely not okay, but it also shouldn't undermine the entire show. It has brought up so many issues that go unspoken in many households otherwise. Ginny's struggle with her biracial identity, the constant need of just wanting to fit in and be included, was relatable in a lot of ways to a lot of teenagers. I would also like to point out that the first episode DOESN'T DO JUSTICE TO MARCUS' CHARACTER. He comes off as the typical bad boy stereotype which isn't him at all, but you only come to know that in the later episodes. Yes Ginny is self centred and a lot of times it annoyed me, but what with everything she is dealing with about her dad and her long lost family it is kinda understandable, coz she felt so invalidated her entire life, that when she finally got attention she made it all about herself. And I also love how there is a backstory to everything, that explains why things are the way things are. And also my man Joe deserves a happy ending!
But overall what makes this show a good binge is it's perfectly paced plot and reveals and (sometimes dark) humour. I would totally recommend this show . If you don't go in with a mindset to pinpoint a singular sexist remark and hate watch the entire show because of it you might actually end up enjoying it.
