A24 knocked it out of the park again with this hilarious and heart wrenching series. BEEF combines elements of comedy, thriller, drama, and even true crime films to portray many complicated and often indescribable feelings. A24 also does a phenomenal job of showing a modern and overlooked view of the Asian American (predominantly East Asian American) experience, from the stigma of getting help for mental health, to familial relationships and expectations, and even the complicated relationship to God and religious communities; all while revolving around an incident that calls upon the stereotype of bad asian drivers, though in todays climate of rage and disagreement, can be relevant and relatable to all.
Steven Yeun had an amazing performance in BEEF; Yeun has a way of making the audience feel the real pain of his characters, as he does in this show and as he has done in his past performances, notably Minar(2020).
Ali Wong is known for her comedy, but if all you’re looking for is a slap-knee comedy show, this is not the show for you. Wong unlocks a different range of emotions in her performance in BEEF, while still calling on her comedic roots and the “funny anger” she often used in her popular routines.
At just ten 30-ish minute episodes, BEEF is definitely worth the watch - if not to see the amazing performances of these two talented actors, to get a different perspective on topics like depression, loneliness, and the cost of success. Be warned that, while comedic at points, it is a heavier show and obviously not suitable for children.
