I just saw this movie again many years after its theatrical release. I came away the second time blown away by it. The first time around I was far too focused on the premise and the trick ending, neither of which were all that surprising, and ignored the guts of the thing: a very compelling story about fear, love, innocence and the loss of it to the horrors that fill our everyday lives. It works for me as allegory.
