Just visited Florence and the series brought the history to life well, filming much of it on location. It is generally historically accurate. Beautiful and sensitively acted and filmed.

Not much of the film was about San Pio's work and life. 80% of the film was about the people having a hard life, the socialist movement at the time etc. Watch the older movie Padre Pio instead.
