The great thing about this movie or the series in general is how it reintroduces the characters in a relatively new and bold way (bold being starting the series off changing Leo and Raph’s dynamic). The film truly works well as a stand-alone for curious viewers or for TMNT fans that have yet to give Rise a shot.
It’s also very telling how children’s media is slowly changing to where we hear ‘badass’ escape from Leo’s lips first four minutes into the film. As well as death and gore being played out, albeit played lightly enough to not be trauma inducing.
From the animation, which if you’re an animation nerd then this film absolutely needs to be at the top of your to watch list, to the characters interacting, to Leo’s character development alone, to the dark themes, the light humor, this is an absolute watch for TMNT fans or animation fans in general!
After this film, I started the series and while not every episode hits, the chemistry between the brothers is enough to keep me going. Plus an actual story does exist within the series that is genuinely interesting to watch and be engaged by. And plus animation still hits! Can definitely say I fell in love with the boys again like I did for the 2012 series! And maybe even more cause these interpretations of these boys gives each of them so much character!
Edit: Also I really hope this movie does well enough to warrant more seasons! This film, while left with an ending that can be satisfying on its own, can still have enough work arounds to add so much more to the story we’ve yet to see. After all (SPOILER DONT READ AHEAD IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW STUFF AT THE ENDING)
