You can tell from the pilot episode that this was a "Spectrum Original", meaning...they are trying their hands at showrunning. Sadly, like most other Spectrum offerings, they are failing miserably.
This show is acceptable as background fare, but not good on any front. Acting is pedestrian, background/mood music sounds like a late 90's Casio synthesizer, the cast are mostly novices and the writing is pretty poor (can't say how it relates to the book writing, as I haven't read them).
There's terrible pacing, the director(s) try random camera angles like they're a recent film school graduate, and there's zero chemistry between actors (not just the main married duo). It's more like congenial line recitation as opposed to acting, and the dialogue is wasteful. The pace of the show is extremely slow (not a detraction) but there's zero suspense in the most dire circumstances.
"It's time to address the elephant on the woodpile" (yes, direct quote from show):
In short, there's nothing I see in this show that's exceptional. None of it is tragically fatal, but the Joe Pickett feels like it's trying to catch lightning in a plastic bottle (or maybe even a Dixie cup).
I'd suggest passing on it unless you just need noise in your house - and even then I'd say it's pretty easy to find much better options.
