Laboured and melodramatic. I’m a huge Batman fan, but this fell sadly short. I get - and even prefer - the dark, rain soaked, emo vibe - but talk of white privilege, Batman now being nicknamed ‘Vengeance’, a dramatic faux suicide into a puddle, Batman being scared of heights, needed to get a room with Gordon and adopted a painful 80’s Robocop’s walk - it just felt like a film student had watched too much Seven. They overshot Bruce Wayne being ‘tortured’ and just made him ‘mental-healthy’. The Penguin was underused, Catwoman had no reason to be Catwoman. Cinematically gorgeous with some fantastic visual moments (Batman fighting in the dark by gunshot-light). The filmic equivalent of Billie Eillish’s diary. Will be widely adored by people under 20.
