Where to start? Peter Pan was an unlikeable character. He lacked his mischief, charm and boyishness and instead sulked most of the movie. Him and Wendy didn’t seem to even like each other. They argued the majority of the movie. Tinker Bell lost all her personality and instead of her classical mischief and jealousy she mostly just smiled and did nothing. The lost boys included lost girls which was pandering to me. I guess I loved the childishness of rowdy little boys who thought a girl was nurturing and that’s why Wendy would be their “mother”. I also was a fan of 2003’s Peter Pan when Peter says “girls are much too clever to fall out of their prams”. Wendy doesn’t even tell stories in this one, hence missing a large part of why Peter wanted her in Neverland to begin with in the original. There’s many themes of girl power that seem reaching. Lines such as when Wendy saves herself after falling off the plank and Hook says “she’s got the boy’s power” and she says “this is no BOY power”. Peter is essentially useless and Wendy and Tiger Lily save everyone. Tiger Lily spends most of the time speaking her native tongue but her tribe is gone and it’s not clearly explained. Everyone except Wendy seems to understand her language though although no one speaks it besides her. Then there’s the Wendy/Tinker Bell relationship where Wendy claims Peter never actually listens to Tink and at the end, Tinkerbell speaks so that Wendy can hear her and says “thanks for hearing me”. Neverland itself was very bland except for the initial entrance where there are mermaid octopus creatures in the water. No other fairies are shown or really anything magical about Neverland. Overall just too bland and pandering.
